YOUTH THERAPY
Teens and young adults often seek therapy for a variety of reasons, such as emotional regulation, self-esteem issues, social anxiety, and depression.
The teen and young adult years are tough, and it's more challenging now than ever before. The pressure and stress that come with school, family, relationships, friends, and society can be overwhelming. Having proper support during these years can significantly affect how a teen perceives themselves and their abilities.
Teens today face not only the usual challenges of becoming adults but also a host of new struggles introduced by social media and online platforms. These include cyberbullying, online harassment, and the pressure to maintain a carefully curated image, which can contribute to low self-esteem and depression. Additionally, the addictive nature of social media can lead to problems such as sleep deprivation, reduced productivity, and isolation.
Therapy for young people aged 12 and up is focused on developing strengths and coping skills to manage challenges such as anxiety, OCD, anger, stress, and more. My approach with teens includes a mix of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Mind/Body practices using, using techniques such as EMDR and body-based therapy to address feelings of anxiety and OCD.
Therapy with youth may be best supported with parent involvement.
Parenting can be challenging, and it often brings up emotional triggers from the past. As parents, we may see our children's issues as our own personal failures. However, taking a collaborative approach to youth therapy can be incredibly beneficial. I have found that with young teens, involving the entire family unit in the solution is essential. As a result I may recommend parents do their own therapy so they can continue to support their child by improving their connection and ensuring the child’s feelings are understood.
